George Mutale

Mr George Mutale is Assistant Director of ICT at the Ministry of Education in Zambia. He has an MBA from the University of St Mark and St John (Plymouth Marjon University), as well as a BSc from the University of Zambia.

At the Ministry of Education, George is responsible for developing policies around EdTech in schools; nurturing, trialling and evaluating EdTech innovations; managing the deployment and maintenance of hardware; ensuring inclusivity of all solutions including for those with special needs; building system resilience against shocks to the system; and promoting the use of ICT for research and development. Most recently he has overseen the design and implementation of a national collection of digital content which is aligned to the Zambian curriculum and print textbooks. This supports the work of the Ministry of Education, which oversees 11,754 primary and secondary schools.

Some of the key challenges George plans to focus on as part of the fellowship include funding, resistance to change, technical issues, access to technology, data security and privacy concerns, and teacher professional development.

As someone who has worked in ICT, I understand the challenges and barriers that may arise when implementing new technology. Many times, I feel a sense of empathy for those who are struggling with these challenges, and I am eager to help them overcome them.
