John Masika

Assistant Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for ICT and Digital Transformation, Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority, Kenya

Mr John Masika is Assistant Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for ICT and Digital Transformation in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority in Kenya.

He has a BScBA in Computer Science from Egerton University and an MBA from Kenyatta University in Kenya.

John has been in his current role for 4 years. He oversees the design, implementation and evaluation of learning solutions across the TVET sector nationally. This includes designing policies and curricula, setting up a national learning management system (LMS) for online training and sourcing open educational resources (OERs), and developing sustainable funding models.

One of the biggest challenges John wants to focus on during the fellowship is leveraging the affordances of technology to improve accessibility, equity and inclusivity of education and training for marginalised groups.

One of his role models is the US academic Professor Muhammad Khalifa, author of “Culturally Responsive School Leadership” and the “Handbook on Urban Educational Leadership.”

“Dr Khalifa argues that ‘collaborative leaders in education seek to involve all direct stakeholders, specifically teachers, school staff and students and their families, to create learning environments that build collective efficacy, to the benefit of all in society’”
