Dr Joshua Valeta is Director of Open, Distance and E-Learning at the Ministry of Education of Malawi. He has held the role since 2021, after moving from his role as an associate professor at a national university. 

As part of the Ministry of Education, Dr Joshua is responsible for developing policy, costed strategies, and building skilled EdTech leadership teams. This includes provision of distance learning for primary and secondary school aged learners through radio, online and offline platforms and print. It also includes supporting tertiary education institutions to expand open, distance and e-learning (ODEL).  

Key challenges Dr Joshua plans to explore as part of the fellowship include devices, cybersecurity concerns, investment in EdTech innovation, and design and implementation of meaningful EdTech research. 

Dr Joshua and his team’s live projects include the setup of an Education Broadcasting Station, and a long term programme to equip all 6,000 early grade schools in Malawi with tablets and award-winning software.
