Mr Shunmugam Padayachee is the Deputy Director General for Teachers, Education Human Resources and Institutional Development at the Department of Basic Education for Pretoria in South Africa. He holds an MBA in negotiation skills as well as degree in Primary Education.
As part of his role, Shunmugam oversees teacher recruitment and placement, as well as an innovative scheme to employ 250,000 unemployed youths as teacher assistants. His team also oversees teacher development and evaluation of these programmes, including programmes to develop teachers’ digital skills.
Shunmugam also oversees the implementation of the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) tests in South Africa.
